Railroad Spikes

Description
Railroad spikes have a long history in American folk magick, particularly in hoodoo and rootwork, where they are traditionally associated with protection, securing property, establishing boundaries, and “nailing down” a home or condition.

The symbolism is unusually straightforward.

A railroad spike is an enormous iron nail designed to hold something powerful, heavy, and constantly subjected to force firmly in place. In ritual work, that mundane function translates naturally into anchoring, fixing, securing, holding, and protecting.

Used spikes carry another layer of character: they have already spent years doing exactly what they were made to do.

Common Uses
Railroad spikes may be incorporated into workings involving:

• Home and property protection
• Establishing or reinforcing boundaries
• “Nailing down” a home, business, or other important place
• Anchoring a protective working
• Fixing or stabilizing a condition
• Working with the traditional protective associations of iron
• Serving as the physical foundation for talismans, charms, or other ritual constructions

Traditional practices sometimes involve placing spikes at the corners or boundaries of a property. Others use them symbolically on an altar, near entrances, or as components in larger protective workings.

Expect variations in rust, surface texture, wear, markings, shape, and patina. Some will be rougher than others. That history is part of the object.

Railroad spikes are heavy forged-metal objects and may have rough, rusty, or sharp surfaces.

Handle with care. Wear appropriate hand protection if necessary.

Do not leave where children or pets can access them.

If displaying indoors, use a protective surface beneath the spike to prevent rust or rough metal from damaging furniture.
