Description
Few objects have accumulated as much folk-magick significance as the humble horseshoe.

Across generations of European and American folk practice, horseshoes have been hung over entrances, incorporated into household protection, carried or displayed for luck, and used symbolically to attract prosperity while guarding against unwanted influence.

Part of that reputation comes from the shoe itself. It belonged to the horse, an animal historically associated with strength, movement, labor, status, and travel. Just as importantly, traditional horseshoes are made of iron, a material with a long-standing reputation in folk belief as protective against harmful spirits, troublesome influences, and bad luck.

Put the two together and you get one exceptionally persistent piece of folk technology.

Common Uses
Railroad spikes may be incorporated into workings involving:

One common interpretation holds that a horseshoe hung points upward acts like a vessel, catching and holding luck.

Another tradition hangs it points downward, allowing luck or blessing to pour over those who pass beneath it.

Folk traditions are rarely improved by pretending there has always been one universal rule.

Expect differences in size, shape, rust, surface wear, nail holes, markings, and patina. Evidence of actual use is part of their character.
