The origins of Baphomet remain rather muddy. In the early 14th Century, several Knights Templar, when put to torture, stated that they worshipped an idol they called “Baphomet”. The image we associate with the name in modern times was drawn by Eliphas Levi. Levi’s intent was to represent the “sum total of the universe” and symbolize his concept of “the equilibrium of the opposites”. Although nothing could be further from the truth, some in the modern era erroneously believe Baphomet is “Satanic”, due to it’s resemblance to the idea of Satan being a horned demon. The name Baphomet does crop up here and there in documents predating the 14th Century, but the references are not well understood.
